If you like keeping up to date with fashion, then you can’t afford to let your home slip. Many people spend hundreds updating the interior of their house, ensuring that the living rooms are cosy, the kitchens look modern and changing the bathrooms every few years. However, the exterior of the house is often neglected. Here are some ways to update your house’s exterior.

Lick of Paint

Painting the outside of your home can give it a fresh burst of life and make it stand out from the crowd. If your home is already painted but hasn’t been redone in recent years then it can start to look worn, with dirt and grime clinging to it and some painted areas may be flaking off. Certain colours are very fashionable, which is great at the time but it can quickly become unfashionable which leaves you with two options: 1) choose a colour that’s relatively neutral or 2) frequently repaint your home.

Highlighting Features

Another common decorating trend is using two colours of paint to emphasise key features like doorway arches, windows and decorative brickwork. Generally this is done with lighter and darker shades, such as cream and charcoal, as the contrast can really bring out your home’s key features. This is a fantastic way of making your home stand out on the street, especially of it is a terraced house.

Replace/ Repaint Windows

Depending on the type of windows you home has, they may need repainting or replacing in order to keep up with the new décor. You can buy specialist paint to give your wooden or UPVC window frames a facelift, however this will not repair any damage to the frames themselves. In the case of wooden frames, you will need to sand the wood back to the base level before painting, whereas UPVC simply requires a coat of primer.

Add Colour to Your Door

The front door catches the eye of everyone who approaches it. If you just have a boring white door then nobody will remember it, but add a splash of colour and people will always think about it whenever they picture your home. Reds, greens and blues are popular choices, as they don’t take too much attention away from the home itself but still provide the burst of colour you need.

Add Plants

Paint can do a lot to change the appearance of your home, but sometimes it needs a little helping hand. Adding plant features to the front of your home can help to draw some of the attention away from the bricks and mortar and introduce a nice bit of living foliage. If you’ve gone for a relatively neutral colour scheme on your home then plants can add a bit of colour without imposing on your décor.
