The Eight Most Avoided DIY Jobs

When it comes to home DIY, many people fancy themselves a guru. However, the reality is that they are good at certain tasks, while others are seemingly far too complicated or difficult. In Britain, it is estimated that DIYers cause around £160 worth of damage to their property every year due to messing up a job. The reasons they took on the project themselves are wide and varied, from saving costs to wanting to be able to say “I did that.”
According to a survey, here are the most avoided DIY jobs around the house:

1. Reapplying Roof Resin

Roofs are tricky things and if you get them wrong then the outside can come inside. Nobody wants that, so despite the fact that reapplying roof resin is relatively easy it is often avoided. To get over this fear why don’t you start small? Do the shed first then work your way up to your home. [image source]

2. Any form of plumbingHard Hat with Tools
Water creates lots of problems and plumbers are there for a reason. When it comes to being a handyman around the home, more than 70% of DIYers shy away from doing any sort of plumbing. That includes everything from the leaky kitchen sink all the way to radiators.

3. Fitting an electric shower

As if water isn’t bad enough, combining water and electricity is enough to scare anyone off. That is exactly why fitting an electric shower puts many people off carrying out the work themselves. There are plenty of instructional videos out there showing you how to do this, but feeling comfortable with it is the best way towards success.

4. Plastering walls and ceilings

Getting a smooth finish on your walls is very important, and if you’ve never plastered before it is very easy for things to go wrong. Practicing on a small surface in order to perfect the technique is a good way to stop making a mess of the room.

5. Knocking down a wall

Knocking down a wall isn’t as simply as just taking a hammer to a wall. You need to think about electrics, water pipes and whether or not they are structural. Plus, after you’ve knocked the wall down you may need to re-plaster the walls and ceiling where it stood – which again is something people want to avoid.

6. Laying down flooring

Whether its carpet, laminate, tiles or even wood flooring people try to avoid it as much as possible. This is probably because it is one of the first things people notice when they walk into a room, and if the flooring is wrong then it can ruin the whole room.

7. Fixing the gutters

This is mainly avoided because it can be difficult to access your gutters. If you use deep plastic guttering then this task can be left for a longer period of time, but failing to maintain and fix your gutter can result in serious damage.

8. Fitting a Kitchen

Another big task that isn’t as difficult as most people think, however it is seriously time consuming if you don’t know what you’re doing. By taking your time and following instructions, you can save yourself thousands on labour costs.
