The Four Different Types of Fascia Boards

Fascia boards can help protect the vulnerable area around the roof of your property from the elements by withstanding the many different weather conditions that your home may face. There are commonly four main choices regarding the types of boards that can be used for the job. Selecting the correct type or style can be a little confusing, so we’ve put together a brief description of each to help you make the right choice for your property.

Capping Fascia Boards

Capping boards are ideal for fitting onto existing timber fascias. This may be useful if your property already has these fascias and you do not want to have to remove them before your new fascias are installed. They can improve the appearance of the outside of your home very quickly as they are easy to install. In addition, they are also one of the cheapest options and if you have a large area to cover they can be very cost-effective.

Ogee Fascia Boards

If the existing timber is in good condition then ogee boards can also be used to cover wooden fascias. These boards have a sculptured edge so they offer something different to fascias that have a square edge. They still offer the same amount of protection that is found with other types of boards, it is just the styling that makes them look different, but this can really make your property stand out.

Square Fascia Boards

Square fascias are often the smallest of the four different types. They are easy to fit and do not require a backing board in order to be installed. They may be more suited to smaller properties as you will not have to purchase too many boards. Plus, the smaller size of the boards themselves will also suit this type of property better.

Round Fascia Boards

Round fascias do not usually require a backing board and they can be fitted directly onto the foot of the rafters. Round fascias will give your home a modern appearance and they are often used on new build homes. They can be used to update the look of your property and may be an attractive addition to any other improvement works that have taken place on the exterior of your home.

It may be worthwhile looking at all of the different fascia options that are available before you make a final decision about which type you will use. You will need to consider the size of the project and whether the design that has been chosen will suit the rest of the house.

Overall, many people prefer round or capping boards because the installation is faster and easier. UPVC plastic tends to be the most popular choice of material, regardless of which style of fascia is chosen.
